  The Topeka Bar Association (TBA) presents "Legal Liftoff: Propel Your Practice with Expert Tips," a CLE program held during the Young Lawyer Luncheon Takeover. This event features a panel of seasoned judges and attorneys, including Judge Turner and Judge Geier from the Shawnee County District Court; Jason McIlrath, Deputy District Attorney; Blake Porter from Federal Home Loan Bank; and Keegan McElroy, Partner at Alderson, Alderson, Conklin, Crow, and Slinkard. The session will be moderated by David Braun, Magistrate Judge of Franklin County.

  The seminar covers essential topics such as effective networking, professional development, work-life balance, ethical practice, client relations, courtroom skills, and legal writing. These insights and practical advice aim to enhance the legal practice and foster professional growth among attendees.

  Participants will gain valuable tools and strategies to excel in their legal careers, regardless of their experience level or practice area. Attendees will participate in a panel discussion and interactive Q&A session, gaining actionable strategies to enhance their legal practice.

  Intellectual Property 101: Trademarks, Copyrights, Trade Secrets, and Patents

  Date: Monday August 19th

  This program provides attorneys with a foundational introduction to intellectual property (IP) and its various protections. It covers four key areas: Trademarks, including their definition, registration process, legal protections, and examples; Copyrights, focusing on what can be copyrighted, the obtaining process, and legal protections; Trade Secrets, explaining what constitutes a trade secret, protection methods, and real-world examples; and Patents, detailing their types, application process, legal protections, and examples of patented inventions.

  Attorneys will gain a clear understanding of the different types of IP, enabling them to advise clients on how to effectively safeguard their creations and innovations.

  Bio: Paige Reese

  Paige helps clients protect their intellectual property.

  As a young student, Paige always had an interest in law; however, she also loved math and engineering. She soon discovered that intellectual property law let her combine both her passions, working with engineers to obtain patents for new inventions and technologies.

  Paige prepares and prosecutes patent applications, conducts patentability and freedom to operate searches, counsels’ clients on the strategic use of intellectual property assets, and drafts and negotiates the complex agreements that underpin software development and licensing. She also provides her intellectual property expertise to advise on general corporate matters and mergers and acquisitions with intellectual property implications. Paige works with clients in a variety of industries and has a particular interest in clients developing new technology and software.

  Paige loves nothing more than the opportunity to work with the engineers and inventors behind new technologies. She finds it truly exciting to watch new ideas come to fruition for clients and deeply rewarding to be able to protect these ideas through the law.

  The process for admitting attorneys into the practice of law in Kansas has recently changed and will undergo even more changes in the near future.  At a time where we are facing attorney deserts across the state of Kansas, it is crucial that attorneys understand these shifting dynamics and adapt accordingly.  Join us for an engaging session where we explore recent changes to Kansas Supreme Court Rules Relating to the Admission of Attorneys, the NextGen Bar Examination and plans for the implementation of the examination in Kansas, and the how all of this relates to the Kansas Supreme Court’s Rural Justice Initiative.   

   Presenter Laurel Klein Searles

  Bio:  Laurel Klein Searles serves as Chief of Attorney Services and Compliance with the Office of Judicial Administration for the Kansas Supreme Court.  Prior to joining OJA, Laurel worked for the Kansas Department of Labor in a variety of roles including Appeals Referee, Chief of Appeals, and Director of Unemployment Insurance.  Laurel also previously served as a staff attorney for both the Social Security Administration and the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence.  Laurel earned her law degree from Washburn University School of Law graduating with Dean’s Honors, and she received her undergraduate degree from Kansas State University.

  CLE:  Nearly every family law attorney has received that call from their client where the client says their ex has hacked their phone. This CLE explores the reality of hacking/stalking cases. You’ll learn how most stalking is not from the hacking of a device, but from shared accounts or device. We’ll explore often overlooked areas of stalking, and how you can work with your client to shut it down. Finally, you’ll learn the most cost-effective ways of utilizing an expert witness to prove stalking has occurred

  Presenter: Patrick Siewert  

  Patrick Siewert is Director of Digital Forensics & E-Discovery for ArcherHall, based in Richmond, Virginia. Patrick has 15 years of law enforcement experience highlighted by high­profile and precedent-setting case work investigating electronically-facilitated crime. He founded Pro Digital Forensic Consulting in 2013, which was acquired by ArcherHall in 2022. Patrick has completed multiple trainings and certificates in the practice areas of computer forensics, mobile device forensics and analysis of cellular historical location records and is well-versed in their value in civil and criminal litigation. He has also qualified as an Expert Witness in the aforementioned disciplines in multiple courts across the Country and is an Adjunct Professor of Digital Forensics at Virginia Commonwealth University.
