Coercive Control in High-Conflict Custody Litigation. This program will focus on current academic research and best practices for identifying and managing domestic violence in high-conflict child custody litigation. The presenter will cover updated definitions and models for domestic violence, particularly the coercive control model, as well as extensive research on the harmful effects of these forms of abuse on not only adult victims but also their children. Participants will learn about steps they can take to address some of these challenges in custody litigation and strive for better outcomes for children and families embroiled in these conflicts. This program will be of interest to all lawyers and be particularly useful for those who practice in family court or related contexts.

Professor Gillian Chadwick,
Washburn University School of Law
Gillian Chadwick is a Professor at Washburn University School of Law in Topeka, Kansas where she serves as Co-Director of the Washburn Child and Family Law Center. Professor Chadwick teaches several courses including Litigation Clinic, in which she supervises students representing primarily children and survivors of gender-based violence in family and immigration law matters. In addition to their direct service work, Professor Chadwick and her students work on community-based lawyering and legislative reform projects. Prior to joining the faculty at Washburn, Professor Chadwick was a Women’s Law and Public Policy Fellow and Clinical Teaching Fellow at Georgetown University Law Center. Professor Chadwick began her lawyering career as a legal aid attorney representing survivors of gender-based violence in the District of Columbia in family and immigration law matters as an Equal Justice Works Fellow. Professor Chadwick’s writing has been published in Ms. Magazine, Huffington Post, and various law journals, including the Harvard Journal of Law & Gender, San Diego Law Review, and Cardozo Law Review. She has appeared in local and national media, including the New York Times and Washington Post. Currently, Professor Chadwick serves on the Kansas Judicial Council Family Law Advisory Committee, Topeka Mayor’s Taskforce Against Domestic Violence, and the Kansas CLE Commission. Professor Chadwick has a JD from American University Washington College of Law and an LLM from Georgetown University Law Center.
