AI on Patrol: How Technology is Shaping Law Enforcement Reports

Discover how the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office is integrating AI into daily operations through Axon’s report-writing platform. By converting spoken narratives into structured reports, this technology reduces administrative time, improves consistency, and keeps more deputies in the field. Attorneys and judges will gain valuable insight into how these AI-generated reports affect accuracy, reliability, and the legal process once they enter the courtroom.

Matt Patterson is General Counsel for the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, where he has advised the agency on legal and administrative matters since 2019. Matt previously served with the Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office as Senior Assistant District Attorney and Chief of Staff and also practiced with Parker & Hay LLP in Topeka. Earlier in his career, Matt worked in private practice representing clients in criminal matters. He earned his J.D. from Washburn University School of Law in 2000.

Rich Eckert I decided to become an attorney when I discovered that not working on the family farm was an option. Although devastated, my mom and dad recovered nicely by making sure I paid for all their meals since graduation. I have a beautiful wife who almost likes me and three kids who love me but consider me a moron. I also buy all their meals. I have been the Shawnee County Counselor for over 18 years. I spent seven years as general counsel for a construction conglomerate. While there, I became an expert in persuading county commissions to grant my company permits for limestone quarries, all while escaping pitchfork-wielding citizens in the parking lot to safely make it back to the company truck. In my spare time, I curse at my three muscle cars which seem to have a pact to break down at the most inconvenient moments during escapades.
