During this 50-minute CLE, Judges Cheryl Rios and Maban Wright will discuss the expungement process from beginning to end, including removal from the drug registry for qualifying offenders. Presenters-Hon. Cheryl Rios and Hon. Maban Wright
Cheryl Rios was appointed to Kansas 3rd Judicial District Court in 2008. Prior to her appointment to the state court bench, she served as an Associate Judge for the City of Topeka, Municipal Court from 2005 to 2008. Prior to taking the bench she practiced critical care nursing for 6 years in Topeka. She has served as Project Coordinator for the quasi-legislative Criminal Justice 3R’s Committee, as a staff attorney for Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, as an adjunct professor at Washburn University and as a former Shawnee County Assistant District Attorney.
Rios enjoys spending time with family, hiking, exercise, reading, watching KU basketball and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Maban Wright has been a Shawnee County District Court Judge for approximately ten minutes. Judge Wright currently presides over felony criminal cases and a monthly expungement docket. Prior to taking the bench, Mrs. Wright was employed by the Board of Indigent Defense Services as a public defender. In that capacity, she was an Assistant, Deputy, and Chief Defender at various offices including the Death Penalty Defense Unit.
Maban Wright is a wife and the mother of two daughters, 13 and 10. In her limited spare time, she enjoys recreational sleep, vigorous non-competitive exercise, and the assiduous avoidance of single-use plastics.
